Description: The Similan Islands are a group of nine granite islands in the Andaman Sea 60 km off the coast of Phang Nga Province, southern Thailand. Similan is a Yawi or Malay word, which means "nine". Recently, the park was expanded to included two remote islands which are Koh Bon and Koh Tachai.

Diving: Being quiet far from the coast, the most common way to dive the Similans is by liveaboards starting from Phuket or Khao Lak. Day trips are also possible but be ready to pay the price. There are many dive operators in both Phuket and Khao Lak (see links below) so if you're not during the busy season (December-January) it's worth going around to try to find a last minute deal.

Dive sites: The Similan national park has typically 2 different kind of diving. The east side consists of gently sloping coral reefs with sandy patches and occasional boulders while the west side is known for its huge underwater granite boulders with numerous swim throughs. North of the Similans, the isolated islands of koh Bon and koh Tachai offer walls and boulders with manta's cleaning stations and even further north is Richelieu Rock with its incomparable variety and abundance of marine life.

Marine life includes sharks (blacktip, whitetip, leopard,...), rays (eagle, manta, marbled,...), morays, ghostpipefishes, frogfishes, octopuses, sea snakes, an occasional whale shark and millions of other reef fishes.

Favorites are "Elephant Head Rock", "East of Eden", "Koh Bon", "Koh Tachai Plateau" and "Richelieu Rock".
